NPA Launches Handbook for Prosecutors on the Management of Gender Based Violence cases in Zambia

Today, on the eve of International Womens’ day, the National Prosecution Authority launched its first ever Handbook for Prosecutors on the Management of Gender Based Violence cases in Zambia. Speaking at the launch, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Gilbert Phiri, SC stated that Gender Based Violence (GBV) is a cancer that needs to be stamped out in order to create a safe and equitable society where women and girls can thrive. Mr Phiri further stated that as the gatekeeper of the criminal justice system, the NPA has the duty to ensure that victims of GBV access timely and victim centred prosecution services which safeguard their wellbeing whilst upholding their dignity and privacy. Strengthening Justice: Combatting Sexual Violence with Prosecutor Training

From October 9th to October 13th, 2023, the National Prosecution Authority organised a five-day training program in the lovely Samfya district. The training brought together prosecutors from Luapula province. This program, generously supported by the Natwapane Programme under the European Union’s Gender-Based Violence initiative, aimed to improve the skills of these prosecutors in handling cases of sexual violence. ASSET RECOVERY INTER-AGENCY COORDINATION FRAMEWORK GETS UPDATE

In January 2023, the National Prosecution Authority, Ministry of Justice, Zambia Police Service, National Anti-Terrorism Centre, Zambia Revenue Authority, Drug Enforcement Commission, Anti-Corruption Commission, Office of the Auditor General, Bank of Zambia, Department of Immigration and the Department of National Parks and Wildlife signed the inter-agency framework creating the National Task Force on Asset Recovery. The aim of the Framework is to support collaboration between competent authorities in tackling serious offences and asset recovery. Six months in, the agencies have updated the membership to include the Office of the President, the Road Transport and Safety Agency, the Patents and Companies Registration Office and the Ministry of Lands in order to increase efficiency in the operations of the Framework.
