The National Prosecution Authority’s Response To Addressing Gender-Based Violence In Zambia

The NPA has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Zambia through innovative practices and collaborative efforts. Speaking at a side event hosted by the NPA and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) titled ‘Innovative Practices in Criminal Justice in the SADC Region’ at the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice – 33rd Session in Vienna, Austria, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Mr. Gilbert A. Phiri SC, highlighted the NPA’s strides in combating GBV. The DPP, accompanied by Senior State Advocates, Vivian Nsingo, Jacklyn Banda, and Samson Zulu, noted that GBV remains a pervasive problem in Zambia, with over a third of women experiencing physical violence and 47% of married women facing physical violence. Landmark Judgment – Chiyeso Lungu’s Properties Forfeited to the State

In a landmark legal development, a panel of three Economic and Financial Crimes Court Judges, has delivered a judgment in favour of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), resulting in the forfeiture of properties belonging to Chiyeso Lungu, daughter of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu. The case, centred on allegations of illicit property acquisition, unfolded with careful legal arguments from both sides. The DPP asserted that two properties, Stand No. L/9390 and Plot No. LUSAK/LN-79093/1, were suspected to be proceeds of crime, valued at K9,375,438.62 and situated in State Lodge. Court Rules in Favour of Director of Public Prosecutions in Forfeiture Case Involving Former First Lady’s Properties

In a significant legal victory, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) emerged victorious in a Non-Conviction Based Forfeiture case against Tasila Lungu, daughter of Former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu. Asset recovery serves as a powerful tool in combating illicit financial activities by sending a clear message that crime crime does not pay and that perpetrators will face consequences for their actions. It is widely recognised that transparent and accountable management of criminal assets is crucial to the asset recovery process. Effective management of these assets requires specialised skills and a need for decision-making independence among those overseeing them.
