The NPA & WCP joint hands to fight Wildlife Crime

Today the National Prosecution Authority and the  Wildlife Crime Prevention Project ,signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at providing technical assistance in the prosecution of Wildlife and Environmental Crime, building capacity of Prosecutors in this field as well as the provision of specialised equipment. The NPA is keen on fighting Wildlife Crime and is fully committed to joining hands with the Wildlife Crime Prevention Project in order to protect Wildlife and the ecosystem.

The first ever Forensic DNA Laboratory launched in Zambia.

The National Prosecution Authority was privileged to attend the launch of the first ever Forensic DNA Laboratory in Zambia, at the Levy Mwanawasa Medical University in Lusaka. The Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Honourable Jack Mwiimbu officially launched the Laboratory. One of the key purposes for the establishment of the Laboratory is to support the investigation and prosecution of Sexual and gender based violence cases. It is envisioned that the usage of DNA will enhance the timeliness of prosecution of cases and provide corroborative evidence which will enhance the survivor’s access to justice and hold perpetrators accountable. The NPA is optimistic that the usage of DNA will positively impact the conviction rate of such cases. The NPA commends the government and co-operating partners for this timely initiative.

Attorney General Alliance Africa (AGAA) Donates Books to The National Prosecution Authority.

The National Prosecution Authority (NPA) received a donation of law books from the Attorney General Alliance Africa (AGAA). During the handover ceremony, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Mr. Gilbert A. Phiri S.C said that he was grateful for the donation and commended AGA- Africa for the long standing partnership with the NPA, which has provided a platform for training programmes and exchange of knowledge. The DPP stated that the reference materials will assist the NPA in enhancing its prosecutorial capabilities in order to hold perpetrators of crime accountable.

Director of Public Prosecutions, Gilbert A Phiri – State Counsel was called to the inner bar on Thursday, 16th February 2023 in the Supreme Court of Zambia. The ceremony completes the process of the attainment of the rank of State Counsel, which was conferred upon him on appointment as Director of Public Prosecutions.Appointment as State Counsel is an office, conferred by the President of the Republic of Zambia that is recognised by the Courts. Members have the privilege of sitting within the inner bar of court, closer to the Judge. Because members wear silk gowns of a particular design, appointment as State Counsel is known informally as receiving, obtaining, or taking silk and SCs are often colloquially called silks.Congratulations to the newest silks in town!!

High court quashes contempt proceedings against prosecutors

The Mansa High Court has reviewed and reversed the decision of the Mansa Subordinate Court to charge and convict 2 prosecutors of contempt of Court. 3 prosecutors namely Robert Mwondela, Justin Mwanang’ombe and Venatio Phiri, all based at the Luapula Provincial Prosecutions Office at Mansa were charged with contempt in the face of the Court on 8th July 2022 by Honorable Muyunda. In the morning of 8th July 2022, the 3 prosecutors were waiting outside the courtroom for the Magistrate to conclude with her civil matters in order for them to proceed with their prosecution business of the day. Unknown to them the Magistrate concluded the civil cases and begun calling the criminal cases without notifying the prosecutors of the switch in proceedings.
