The People v. Emmanuel Chunga

Case Overview
Emmanuel Chunga faced 34 Counts of Causing Death by Dangerous Driving. He was accused of having caused the deaths of 34 people on 3rd September, 2023 at Luano in the Luano District of the Central Province by driving his motor vehicle namely Scania Truck registration number BAL 4689 ZM along Masansa- Mboroma Road.

On the material day, he was carrying 58 passengers in his truck together with a number of assorted goods. 34 of his passengers died on the spot whilst 24 sustained body injuries after he failed to negotiate a curve, due to the excessive speed he was driving at. He was unlicensed at the time.

Legal Proceedings
He pleaded guilty before Hon. Judge Limbani on 3rd June, 2024, in the High Court at Kabwe.

Sentencing
The Honorable Judge sentenced Emmanuel Chunga to three years imprisonment with hard labor, in respect of each count on 12th June, 2024. The sentences are to run concurrently.

The Conviction of Emmanuel Chunga serves as a deterrent measure to would be offenders of similar offences. This in turn will preserve the many lives of innocent citizens using public roads.
