The National Prosecution Authority was privileged to attend the launch of the first ever Forensic DNA Laboratory in Zambia, at the Levy Mwanawasa Medical University in Lusaka. The Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Honourable Jack Mwiimbu officially launched the Laboratory. One of the key purposes for the establishment of the Laboratory is to support the investigation and prosecution of Sexual and gender based violence cases. It is envisioned that the usage of DNA will enhance the timeliness of prosecution of cases and provide corroborative evidence which will enhance the survivor’s access to justice and hold perpetrators accountable. The NPA is optimistic that the usage of DNA will positively impact the conviction rate of such cases.
The NPA commends the government and co-operating partners for this timely initiative.
